Getting started

How do I get started with TMS in New Jersey?

Three steps, no referral needed in most cases. Here is what the path from searching to your first session actually looks like.

  1. Step 1

    Find a provider near you

Search by town, county or ZIP and compare clinics on insurance accepted, protocols offered and real patient reviews.

  2. Step 2

    Book your consultation

Call the practice directly or send one short request and we pass it straight to clinics taking new patients.

  3. Step 3

    Meet your TMS provider

A psychiatrist confirms you are a candidate, handles the insurance authorisation, and maps out your six-week course.

What TMS is

A drug-free depression treatment, available in New Jersey since 2008

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for depression that has been available across New Jersey since 2008. It uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain that regulates mood and that is measurably underactive in many people with treatment-resistant depression. A standard course runs five days a week for six weeks, each session lasting between three and thirty-seven minutes depending on the protocol. There is no anesthesia, no sedation, and no recovery time — most New Jersey patients drive themselves to and from appointments and go straight back to work.

This site exists because finding a TMS provider in New Jersey is harder than it should be. Coverage is dense in Bergen, Essex and Monmouth counties and thin in the southern and northwestern parts of the state, insurance requirements differ sharply between Horizon BCBS NJ, Aetna and Medicare, and clinic websites rarely publish the details that actually matter: which coil they use, whether they offer accelerated protocols, and how long the wait is.

FDA-cleared and non-invasive

No anesthesia, no sedation, no recovery time. Most patients drive themselves home and go straight back to work.

Covered by every major NJ insurer

Horizon BCBS NJ, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Medicare all cover TMS for depression once prior-treatment criteria are met.

Six weeks, five days a week

A standard course is 36 sessions. Accelerated theta burst protocols compress that dramatically at clinics that offer them.

Insurance

What New Jersey insurers require before they approve TMS

Every major insurer operating in New Jersey covers TMS for major depressive disorder, but all of them require documented failure of prior treatment first. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, the state's largest carrier, generally requires trials of at least four antidepressants from two different classes plus a course of psychotherapy. Aetna and Cigna typically require two to four failed medication trials. Medicare covers TMS in New Jersey under Novitas Solutions' local coverage determination, which requires trials of four medications or documented intolerance. NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) coverage exists but is limited and prior authorization is strict. Most New Jersey clinics handle the authorization paperwork for you — ask before your consultation.
